A/V Out
Canon's intended use is for reviewing pics and videos using an analog TV running PAL or NTSC. Canon provides cables terminating in yellow RCA connector (analog video signal. See Composite video) and red and white RCAs offering right and left audio channel.
ML is able to tweak this function for dedicated cams*. In video mode it can be used for headphone monitoring which is a feature Canon only provides in camcorders and a few high tier DSLRs.
This connection comes in 2 varieties:
- 3.5 mm TRS. Found in 5D2.
- Micro-USB B. Better: Canon's proprietary connector which looks like an Mikro-USB B connector and labeled “A/V OUT” “Digital”.
1) 3.5 mm TRS
Requires Canon's “Stereo Video Cable SRV-250N” coming with 3 RCA connectors for Composite Video (yellow) and stereo audio (white and red). With some soldering skills you can create your own headphone monitoring cable using standard electronic parts. Or use “SESCOM DSLR-5DMKII-HOCM” (out of production).
2) Mini-USB B
Canon's “A/V OUT” may look like a standard USB Mini-B connector but offers 2 different functions: 2.1) Standard USB 2.0 interface 2.2) Analog video and audio output.
This non-standard mixing of functions causes some trouble to understand and ML doesn't make it exactly easier by adding an additional feature for said port.
2.1) Standard USB 2.0 interface:
No trouble so far. 5 circuits for USB 2.0 transfer. Any standard USB cable with Micro-B plug fits.
2.2 A/V OUT
Below those 5 pins hosting USB there are additional 6 (six) pads. The only way to access them is Canon's proprietary cable labeled “AVC-DC400ST” (or a cable revamped from this: SESCOM DSLR-550D-HOCF). You cannot access this function with any standard USB cable.
A/V Out is not implemented in entry level cams 1100D, 1200D, 1300D, 2000D, 4000D.
